Jewish Heritage Morocco Tour

Trace Morocco's extraordinary Jewish legacy through ancient mellahs, synagogues, cemeteries & cultural sites from Casablanca to Essaouira.

Morocco's Jewish story is unlike any other in the Arab world. For more than 2,000 years, Jewish and Muslim communities built cities side by side, traded in the same souks, and shared the same festivals. The evidence of that coexistence is everywhere — in ancient cemeteries overlooking river valleys, in synagogues with hand-painted ceilings that have stood for centuries, in the warm welcome extended to Jewish visitors across the country today.

This 10-day private tour tells that story fully and honestly. From the Museum of Moroccan Judaism in Casablanca — the only institution of its kind in the Arab world — to the restored Abensour Synagogue in Fes, the Lazama Synagogue in Marrakech's Mellah, and the Jewish graves in Ouarzazate, you'll discover a heritage that is deeply Moroccan, deeply universal, and profoundly moving. And because Morocco is also mountains and desert and ancient kasbahs, this tour never sacrifices adventure for culture — you'll have both in equal measure.

Casablanca Arrival
Arrival in Morocco's Cosmopolitan Capital

Your private driver meets you at Mohammed V International Airport and takes you to your hotel in Casablanca. This is Morocco at its most modern and multicultural.

The Museum of Moroccan Judaism & Two Royal Capitals

Begin with a guided tour of the Museum of Moroccan Judaism in Casablanca's Oasis neighbourhood — the only institution of its kind in the Arab world, housing an extraordinary collection of religious objects, photographs, and cultural artefacts spanning 2,000 years. Then visit the magnificent Hassan II Mosque on the Atlantic seafront (one of the few mosques in Morocco open to non-Muslims), and the Beth-El Synagogue in the historic city centre.

In the afternoon, drive north to Rabat — Morocco's quiet, garden-filled royal capital. Visit the Mohammed V Mausoleum, an immaculate white marble shrine guarded by mounted Royal Guards in ceremonial dress, and the adjacent Hassan Tower, an 800-year-old minaret that was never completed.

Imperial Gates, Holy Cities & Roman Ruins

Drive to Meknes, the 17th-century imperial city of Sultan Moulay Ismail — whose Jewish community once numbered in the thousands. Stand before the colossal Bab el-Mansour gate and visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. Continue to the hilltop holy town of Moulay Idriss, then to Volubilis, a UNESCO-listed Roman city whose 3rd-century mosaics depict mythological figures still vivid in lapis, ochre, and ivory. Jewish communities lived and traded here during Rome's North African empire. Arrive in Fes by evening.

Full Day in Fes
Fes Mellah — Morocco's Oldest Jewish Quarter

Fes was home to one of the most prosperous Jewish communities in the medieval world. Today your licensed guide takes you deep into the Mellah — established in 1438, one of the oldest Jewish quarters in Morocco — past the iron-balconied houses where Jewish merchant families lived for centuries. Visit the restored Abensour Synagogue, its carved cedar ceiling and zellige tilework still breathtaking after five centuries. Walk through the ancient Jewish cemetery, where inscriptions in Hebrew bear witness to 600 years of community life.

Continue into the broader Old Medina (UNESCO World Heritage Site) to see the Attarine Medersa, the Chouara Tanneries, and the Nejjarine Fountain. Enjoy a rooftop lunch with views across the ancient city's minarets and rooftops.

Through the Middle Atlas to the Desert Gateway

Leave Fes and drive south through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas — stopping for a picnic lunch amid the mountain air near Midelt, a silver-mining town on the crossroads between the Atlas and the Sahara. Descend through the dramatic Ziz Valley, a river gorge lined with thousands of date palms whose afternoon light turns gold and green in equal measure. Arrive in Erfoud, the oasis city that serves as the gateway to the Sahara.

Sacred Markets, Gnawa Music & the Sahara at Sunset

Visit the Ksar Abbar ruins and the famous market. Then stop in the remote village of Khamlia, where descendants of West African slaves still perform Gnawa music — a hypnotic, therapeutic art form linked to Jewish and Islamic spiritual traditions, and listed by UNESCO since 2019. In the late afternoon, mount your camel at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes for a sunset trek into the Sahara.

Wake before dawn to climb the dune behind camp and watch the Sahara sunrise in absolute silence — arguably the most beautiful moment of the entire tour. After breakfast, your camel carries you back to the desert edge, and you head west on the legendary road through the gorges. Todra Gorge is dramatic: 300-metre sheer canyon walls narrowing to barely 10 metres, with a cold river running through the shadows at their base. Continue to Dades Gorge, with its extraordinary sculpted rock formations in deep reds and ochres, and spend the night in a comfortable mountain lodge overlooking the valley.

Stop in Ouarzazate — the "Hollywood of Morocco" — where Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, and dozens of directors have filmed. Then spend time at Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage ksar of mud-brick towers where Game of Thrones and Gladiator were filmed. Jewish graves have been found in this ancient fortified village, connecting it to Morocco's broader heritage story. Cross the Tizi n'Tichka Pass and descend to Marrakech.

Today your guide takes you through its distinctive iron-balconied alleyways to the Lazama Synagogue, built in 1492 by Jews expelled from Spain, and still used by the city's small remaining Jewish community for services on Shabbat and festivals. The courtyard's hand-painted tiles and wooden ark are among the most beautiful in Morocco. Frequently Asked Questions

Morocco has one of the oldest Jewish communities in the world, with roots going back over 2,000 years to the time of the Phoenicians. Unlike much of Europe and the Middle East, Moroccan Jews and Muslims largely coexisted peacefully for centuries — trading, building cities, and sharing cultural practices. The country contains the only Museum of Moroccan Judaism in the Arab world, along with ancient cemeteries, beautifully maintained synagogues, and a national culture that actively celebrates its Jewish heritage.

Some are. The Lazama Synagogue in Marrakech holds services on Shabbat and during Jewish festivals, attended by the city's small remaining Jewish community and visiting Jewish travelers from around the world. Other synagogues — including the Abensour in Fes — have been beautifully restored as cultural heritage sites and are open for respectful visits with knowledgeable guides.

Not at all. This tour is for anyone fascinated by history, multicultural coexistence, and the extraordinary layering of civilizations that makes Morocco unlike any other destination. The Jewish heritage sites are situated alongside magnificent mosques, Roman ruins, Berber kasbahs, and Saharan landscapes. Many of our most enthusiastic past travelers on this tour have been historians, teachers, and culturally curious travelers with no direct connection to Moroccan Jewish heritage.

Yes — with advance planning, we can arrange participation in a Friday night Shabbat service at the Lazama Synagogue in Marrakech, or help coordinate a meaningful ceremony at one of Morocco's heritage synagogues. Please mention this at the time of booking and we will work with local contacts to make it possible.

Kosher restaurants and food options exist in Casablanca, Marrakech, and Fes — Morocco's largest cities. Many traditional Moroccan dishes (vegetable tagines, grilled fish, couscous with vegetables) are naturally compatible with Jewish dietary needs. Let us know your requirements at booking and we will ensure your dining options throughout the tour are appropriate and enjoyable.
