A 10-day family itinerary: imperial cities and the Sahara

Morocco is one of the few destinations where kids and parents are equally captivated, from ancient medinas to camel rides at sunset and the sheer scale of the Sahara. This ten-day private itinerary loops through the imperial cities and the desert at a pace built for families.

WHY IT WORKSWhy Morocco works beautifully for family travel

Morocco is one of the few destinations where kids and parents are equally captivated. Ancient medinas, camel rides at sunset, and the sheer scale of the Sahara create memories that stay with families for decades. The key is doing it right. A private, custom itinerary removes the stress of logistics and lets your family focus entirely on the experience. Since 1999 we have designed private tours for North American families, and this ten-day loop is one of our most requested family formats. It follows the same imperial-cities-and-desert arc as our Imperial Cities of Morocco private tour, reshaped around the pace and interests of younger travelers.

THE ROUTEThe 10-day imperial cities and Sahara loop

Days 1 to 2: Marrakech, arrival and orientation

Start in Marrakech, where the energy is immediate and the sensory experience is unlike anywhere else. Your private licensed guide introduces your family to the Djemaa el-Fna square, the souks, and the Bahia Palace at a pace that suits children. Staying in a well-appointed riad keeps the experience authentic without sacrificing comfort. You skip the chaos of navigating alone, since your guide handles everything from directions to pricing.

Days 3 to 4: High Atlas and Ait Benhaddou

Your private vehicle heads south through the High Atlas Mountains. The Tizi n'Tichka pass offers dramatic scenery, and kids love spotting Berber villages along the way. Ait Benhaddou, the famous UNESCO-listed ksar, is a natural highlight, and walking through its ancient earthen walls feels like stepping into another century. Families often recognize it from films, which adds an extra layer of excitement for older kids.

Marrakech opens and closes the loop, with the Koutoubia minaret rising above the medina at dusk.

Days 5 to 6: Draa Valley to the Sahara Desert

The road through the Draa Valley, lined with palm groves and kasbahs, builds anticipation perfectly. Arriving at the Sahara dunes near Merzouga is a moment families never forget. A private camel trek at dusk, followed by a night in a luxury desert camp with real beds and private facilities, is the centerpiece of this itinerary. Sleeping under the stars in the Erg Chebbi dunes is genuinely one of the world's great travel experiences, and for many children it becomes the memory that outlasts every other.

Days 7 to 8: Ziz Valley to Fes

The drive north through the Ziz Gorge and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas is scenic and varied. Families often spot Barbary macaques near Azrou, which is a guaranteed hit with younger travelers. Arriving in Fes, Morocco's oldest imperial city, sets up the next chapter of the journey, and we recommend two nights here to do it justice.

Fes el-Bali, the world's largest car-free urban area, closes the imperial-cities half of the loop.

Days 9 to 10: Fes medina and return to Marrakech

Fes el-Bali is the world's largest car-free urban area and one of the most extraordinary places on earth. Your private guide navigates the medina's 9,000 lanes with ease, bringing the history to life for every age group. Highlights include the Bou Inania Madrasa, the tanneries, and the vibrant food stalls. A comfortable private transfer back to Marrakech on Day 10 closes the loop, leaving time for last-minute shopping before departure.

PACINGWhat makes this itinerary work for families

Pacing is everything when you travel with kids. This itinerary balances movement with rest, and active exploration with downtime. Your private SUV or minivan means no waiting for shared transport, no fixed group schedules, and the freedom to stop whenever something catches your family's eye. Every guide we work with is officially licensed and experienced with family groups. They know how to engage children without losing the adults, and they handle every logistical detail so parents can be fully present.

If you want to understand how we build custom routes, or you are weighing a shorter trip, our guide to family Morocco tours walks through the options, and our booking checklist for families covers the practical details worth settling before you commit. For a broader ten-day route that is not built specifically around children, compare our day-by-day best ten-day Morocco itinerary, and if you are traveling with a wide age range, our age-by-age guide for toddlers, tweens, and teens helps you tune the pace to each child.
